If you are new to hog hunting, there’s a lot you probably need to learn to become good at it and ultimately enjoy the experience. If you’ve never thought of hunting hogs, we will let you in on the basics and why you need to put it in your bucket list this year.
Knowing where to hunt
To succeed in hog hunting, you’ll need to choose areas where hogs are thriving. You should, at least, spot a few hogs before they see you. Don’t go hunting in a place where there are few, if any hogs. Scout for hog signs in Georgia before you even plan to go hunting so that you can know exactly where you’ll be going.
Be quiet and move slowly
When going for a hog hunt, you need to move very slowly and quietly. Take cover so that the hog doesn’t see you. Most importantly, be patient and wait for the right time to shoot. If you blow your cover and move so fast, you won’t even get to see the hog. And be sure not to give up too quickly. Hog hunting can be as simple or as hard as you make. That’s part of the challenge and what’s makes the sport appreciated by so many hunters in Georgia.
Knowing when to shoot
Once you spot a hog, you need to decide fast. Is it the right time to shoot? Observe the hog first. If you have adequate cover then move slowly until you are in the right shooting position. Don’t try to shoot a group of hogs that are feeding. Be quiet and shoot only when you’re ready or else you’ll end up chasing away all the hogs and missing out on any chances to make a kill.
Avoid unnecessary sounds
Any sounds that are unfamiliar will easily chase the hogs away. So don’t make the mistake of carrying your phone when you go hunting or fiddling with your gun. Hogs notice the slightest sounds that they’re not used to in their habitat.
Hunting over a feeder
If you are using a feeder when hog hunting in Georgia, don’t make any noises when going near the stand. Approach the stand carefully and quietly and make sure you don’t put out any unusual scent that will alert the hogs. You also need to place your stand strategically if you want your hunt to be a success. Consider the wind because it helps you to make some little noise and move when approaching your stand.
